Smart Watch or Fitness band? Fitbit or Garmin? Fitbit Flex or Alta? Who is Winning the Wearables Space?

For past few days, a deep curiosity led me to do some research into the wearables space in terms of what is actually being used. And the business side of me trying to ensure that is covering APIs to all the top 10!

One of the first articles, I landed upon was a recent survey (March 2016) done by PricewaterhouseCoopers on the type of wearable devices owned by a sample of population in the US. Among the group surveyed, 45% of them are using a fitness band and 27% are using smart watches (and this is almost one year after Apple Watch!). So it looks like Smart Watches have a long road to cover to reach the popularity of fitness bands. According to another survey, the costs seems to be a prohibitive factor among the consumers

In terms of the wearable manufacturing companies, according to IDC, a research firm, the top 5 companies are:

  1. Fitbit
  2. Xiaomi
  3. Apple
  4. Garmin
  5. Samsung

Yes that is correct the 2nd place went to Xiaomi (it is not an “find odd one out question”). They are crazy popular in China and the Mi 2 band is currently sold for $14.99! In terms of features, it pretty much does what an entry level Fitbit Flex would do (Disclaimer: I haven’t tried out the Mi 2 band but readers can respond in the comment below about their experience).

Next, I was curious in terms of Fitbit what specific products are consumers are buying the most. So with a lot of digging, I came up with following:

  1. Flex
  2. One
  3. Zip
  4. Alta
  5. Charge/HR
  6. Blaze
  7. Surge
